It serves as the national headquarters for the English Folk Dance and Song Society, an organization established to preserve and promote England's traditional songs, dances, and musical customs. The building is named in honor of Cecil Sharp, a man who spent his life traveling the country to record folk traditions that were rapidly vanishing in the early twentieth century.
