Theatro Technis was founded in nineteen fifty-seven by George Eugeniou and a group of fellow actors in a garage in Camden Mews. For its first decade of existence, the company shared this small, improvised space with the owner’s private car. Eugeniou had moved to London from Cyprus in nineteen fifty and chose to reject a career as a mainstream actor to instead dedicate his life to creating this radical, independent venue. By housing the theatre in a working garage, the founders established a philosophy centered on breaking down the barriers between theatre and the everyday lives of the local community.
