Markham Square sits on ground that was once a productive orchard. In the late eighteenth century, this land formed part of a property known as Box Farm, owned by a man named Matthew Markham. The square as you see it today began to take shape after a private Act of Parliament was passed in eighteen twenty-five, which allowed for the land to be transformed from its semi-rural state into a residential development.
