The Chelsea Pensioners Exhibition is housed within the Soane Stable Yard, a historic site originally designed by the celebrated architect Sir John Soane between eighteen fourteen and eighteen seventeen. While the buildings themselves are significant for their architectural heritage, they serve as the gateway to the lives of the residents of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. This institution was founded by King Charles the Second in sixteen eighty-two specifically to provide a sanctuary for veterans broken by age and war. The exhibition allows you to trace the centuries of history behind this home and understand the daily experiences of the men and women who have retired here after careers in the British Army.
