Wellington Square stands on land that once served a very different purpose. Before the elegant stucco terraces were built in the mid nineteenth century, the site was occupied by a nursery owned by the florist and celebrated tulip fancier Thomas Davey. You are walking through a space that transitioned from a vibrant horticultural garden to a quiet residential enclave named in honor of the Duke of Wellington, whose funeral procession passed nearby at the Royal Hospital.
