St Bride's Church

St Bride's Church is famous for a silhouette that changed weddings forever. If you look closely at the building's distinctive, four-tiered steeple, you might notice it resembles the classic shape of a traditional wedding cake. Legend holds that in the eighteenth century, a local baker's apprentice named William Rich was tasked with creating a show-stopping cake for his own wedding. He gazed out at this newly completed spire and decided to replicate its tiered, diminishing design in icing and sponge. That creative choice became the template for the tiered wedding cakes still used around the world today.
