Statue of Hugh Dowding

The bronze statue of Hugh Dowding stands guard outside the Church of Saint Clement Danes on the Strand. This location holds specific meaning, as the church serves as the central sanctuary for the Royal Air Force and functions as a lasting monument to those who fell during the war. Sculptor Faith Winter designed the figure, which was unveiled in nineteen eighty eight by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The ceremony featured a flypast by a single Spitfire, a tribute to the aircraft Dowding famously championed for the defense of the nation. His son, who served as a pilot during the Battle of Britain, described the work as an uncanny likeness of his father.
