Fox and Anchor

The Fox and Anchor sits on the edge of the historic Smithfield meat market and represents a fading slice of London industrial life. While the site has hosted a pub since the middle of the eighteenth century, the building you see today dates to eighteen ninety-eight. It was constructed specifically to serve the butchers and market porters who labored through the night. Because of those workers, it was one of the very few pubs in the city licensed to open at dawn, allowing market staff to finish their shifts with a hearty breakfast and a pint. Today, it remains one of the last places in the area where you can still experience that tradition.
