The British Interplanetary Society is the oldest space advocacy organization in the world. It began in nineteen thirty-three in Liverpool when a small group of enthusiasts decided that space travel was a serious engineering goal rather than just a subject for science fiction. Because they lacked the funds to build actual rockets and were restricted by strict British explosives laws, they focused their energy on producing rigorous, detailed blueprints for space travel decades before the technology existed to build them.
