The Oval

The Oval began its life not as a sporting arena, but as a market garden. Before the cricket pitch arrived in eighteen forty-five, the land was used to grow vegetables, and its very shape was defined by a road laid around a cabbage patch in the late eighteenth century. When the Surrey County Cricket Club took over the lease, they famously imported ten thousand grass turfs from Tooting Common to transform the humble plot into a professional field.
