Walcot Square is a deceptive name for this place, as you are standing in a distinct triangle rather than a square. It was laid out between 1837 and 1839 on land that once served as market gardens, where the city’s produce was grown before London spread outward. The triangular layout was not a grand design choice, but rather a byproduct of the irregular borders of an estate held in trust since the seventeenth century.
