Great Pilgrimage

The North Paddington Nature Pilgrimage is a contemporary urban trail that reimagines the centuries-old tradition of the Camino de Santiago for the local streets, canals, and green spaces of Westbourne, Queen’s Park, and Harrow Road. Rather than traveling to a distant cathedral, residents and visitors traverse a six-mile circular route to discover landmarks, community hubs, and pockets of biodiversity within this densely populated neighborhood. The project functions like a classic pilgrimage, complete with a Pilgrim’s Passport. Along the way, walkers stop at libraries, gardens, and places of worship to collect physical stamps, many of which were designed by local children to highlight specific sites of historical or environmental interest. This initiative serves as a counterweight to external narratives about the area, providing a space for residents to reclaim their environment and find beauty in their own backyard. By linking places like Meanwhile Gardens—a former industrial site turned community oasis—to the public library system, the route encourages a slower, more deliberate way of moving through the city.
