Hudson Memorial Bird Sanctuary

The Hudson Memorial Bird Sanctuary honors William Henry Hudson, a writer and naturalist who spent his life campaigning for the protection of birds at a time when city parks were strictly manicured and devoid of wild, natural growth. Decades before this sanctuary was established, Hudson himself was a penniless immigrant in London who occasionally slept on the very park benches located near where you are standing now. His transition from a struggling, homeless newcomer to a celebrated author and environmental pioneer eventually led to the creation of this protected refuge.
