Merchant Square Footbridge

landmark

The Merchant Square Footbridge is a kinetic sculpture that functions as a pedestrian crossing over the Grand Union Canal. When fully lowered, it appears as a flat, simple deck, but its transformation is quite deliberate. It is nicknamed the Fan Bridge because its five steel beams rise in sequence to mimic the unfolding of a traditional Japanese hand fan. This mechanical choreography allows canal boats to pass underneath while creating a brief, dramatic spectacle for observers on the banks.
