St Mary's Hospital, London

St Mary's Hospital opened its doors in 1851 as the last of London's great voluntary hospitals. It was built on the site of a former reservoir belonging to the Grand Junction Waterworks Company. From its earliest days, the hospital was designed to function as both a place for medical care and a dedicated teaching institution. Its founding followed significant public health challenges in the Paddington area, which had struggled with outbreaks of typhoid and cholera as the neighborhood rapidly expanded. Continue
