Water Maze

landmark

The Water Maze in Merchant Square is a specialized fountain designed to challenge your perception and agility. It consists of three hundred and twenty individual water jets arranged in precise concentric circles. As you approach, you will notice that the jets do not spray continuously. Instead, they rise and fall in calculated patterns, creating shifting gaps that invite you to step into the center. The design relies on these gaps to create a game where the primary goal is to reach the middle without getting wet. Most people find that the moving water is faster than it appears, making it nearly impossible to navigate the labyrinth of sprays without getting splashed. It serves as a modern, interactive installation that transforms the canal side into an open-air playground, contrasting with the rigid, industrial history of the surrounding Paddington Basin.
