You are arriving at the Churchill Gardens Estate, a sprawling residential complex that fundamentally changed how London thought about post-war living. When the Second World War ended, the local Westminster City Council launched an international architectural competition to replace the bombed-out Victorian terraces that previously stood on this site. Two young, relatively unknown architects, Philip Powell and Hidalgo Moya, won the commission while still in their twenties. They sought to move away from the dense, anonymous blocks of the past by creating a mixed development that prioritized sunlight, air, and communal green space for every resident.
