The grand Imperial Baroque buildings you see today were once the intellectual center for military medicine in the British Empire. From 1907 until 1999, this site served as the Royal Army Medical College, where surgeons and medical officers trained for the unique challenges of battlefield health. Its establishment on Millbank was a direct response to the high rates of disease and medical failure seen during the Boer War, leading the army to invest in a permanent home for advanced medical research and professional training.
