Porchester Square

park garden

Porchester Square gets its name from the ancestral seat of the Thistlethwaite family, who were major landowners in this part of London for generations. Their primary estate was Portchester Castle in Hampshire, a site that dates back to Roman times and later served as a medieval royal fortress. When this area of Bayswater began its transition from agricultural fields to urban development in the mid-nineteenth century, the family name traveled north with the streets and the square.
