Thames Tunnel

The Thames Tunnel holds the distinction of being the first tunnel in history to be successfully constructed beneath a navigable river. Before its completion in 1843, engineers deemed the feat impossible, as previous attempts by others had ended in catastrophic flooding and collapse.
