The heavy, weathered bronze nose hanging above the main entrance of Brasenose College is a copy of a medieval knocker that once hung at Stamford. Legend claims students and staff fled there in thirteen thirty-three to escape town-gown riots, taking their emblem with them. They retrieved the original in eighteen ninety from a house in Lincolnshire, and it now hangs in the college dining hall. The iron gate remains the signature of this sixteenth-century foundation, where generations of students have studied under its gaze.
