New College is distinguished by its massive, crenelated medieval bell tower and the original fourteenth-century flint walls that enclose its gardens. William of Wykeham founded the college in thirteen seventy-nine to train scholars for the church. During the English Civil War, the college treasure rooms served as a royal mint for King Charles the First, where gold and silver plate were melted down to pay his soldiers. Today, the college remains one of the oldest academic institutions in the university.
