The Divinity School features a ceiling of fan vaulting so intricate that its stone ribs seem to defy gravity. Completed in fourteen eighty-eight, it served as the original lecture hall for theology students at Oxford University. While scholars debated scripture below, Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, donated his collection of books to the upper floor, turning the building into a library. Eventually, the university outgrew the space, leaving behind these limestone carvings and the quiet weight of centuries of academic life.
