William Westerfeld House

The William Westerfeld House stands at the corner of Fulton and Scott Streets as an imposing example of Stick-style Victorian architecture. Built in eighteen eighty-nine, this twenty-eight room mansion was commissioned by German confectioner William Westerfeld, who arrived in San Francisco as a teenager and built a successful chain of local bakeries. The structure cost nearly ten thousand dollars to complete and originally featured an extensive rose garden and a private carriage house. It remains a recognized San Francisco landmark, having survived the urban renewal projects that demolished thousands of other historic buildings in the surrounding district.
