Holly Park exists thanks to a massive land grant donation made in eighteen sixty-two by James Graham Fair. Fair was a legendary figure in San Francisco history who amassed a fortune in Nevada silver and later built the Fairmont Hotel. He carved this specific seven and a half acre parcel out of the much larger Bernal Rancho estate to gift it to the city. While the park is today a fixture of the neighborhood, it remained largely inaccessible to the public for decades because the surrounding hills were still completely undeveloped.
