Rancho Rincon de las Salinas y Potrero Viejo

historic

You are standing on land that once formed the core of a massive Mexican land grant known as Rancho Rincon de las Salinas y Potrero Viejo. The name translates to the corner of the salty marshes and the old pasture. It was granted in 1839 by the Mexican government to Jose Cornelio Bernal, a soldier who served on the historic Anza Expedition. This grant spanned over four thousand acres, covering what are now neighborhoods like Bernal Heights, the Excelsior, and the industrial shores of the Bayview.
