The Jerry Garcia Amphitheater began as an unnamed, multi-purpose outdoor venue built by the city in 1970. It was constructed to take advantage of a natural, hillside depression in the landscape of what is now John McLaren Park. The original design featured a stark, Greek-style stage with concrete vertical troughs acting as a sounding board to project music across the seating area.
