Friends of Jerry Garcia Amphitheater

The Jerry Garcia Amphitheater began its life in nineteen seventy as a simple, unnamed concrete venue built into a natural hillside within John McLaren Park. Its design features a series of vertical concrete troughs acting as a sounding board, an architectural choice meant to capture sound in an open-air, Greek-style setting. Long before construction began, the potential of this land was recognized in a nineteen thirty-six newspaper article, which noted how the natural topography of the site already mimicked the shape of a theater.
