Bernal Heights Community Garden

The Bernal Heights Community Garden holds the distinction of being the oldest community garden in San Francisco. Its origins trace back to the nineteen seventies, when a group of neighborhood activists partnered with the San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners to reclaim the land. The site sits on property that was once part of a vast nineteenth century rancho owned by Jose de Cornielio de Bernal. Today, the garden serves as an anchor for several other community greening projects that dot the slopes of the hill.
