Latino Cultural District

The Latino Cultural District along twenty-fourth street serves as the spiritual and political heart of San Francisco’s Latino community. Local residents and merchants organized this area to protect their long-standing neighborhood from the pressures of rising costs and displacement. Their work officially secured the district as a protected cultural zone in two thousand fourteen, making it the first of its kind in the city. The community prioritizes the preservation of small, locally owned businesses and the many murals that line the surrounding alleys. These works of art act as a public record, capturing decades of activism and the migration stories of the families who built this neighborhood.
