Acción Latina

Acción Latina serves as a cornerstone of the Mission District, acting as a hub for community media, arts, and civic engagement. The organization began in 1970 as a classroom project at San Francisco State University, where students in a La Raza Studies course sought to address the lack of Latino representation in mainstream journalism. They launched a bilingual newspaper called El Tecolote, which translates to The Owl, choosing the bird as a symbol of wisdom. By 1971, the project moved out of the university and into the neighborhood, establishing a permanent home for grassroots advocacy that continues to operate today.
