St. Mary's Square

St. Mary's Square sits as a quiet rooftop garden built directly above an underground parking garage. When designers renovated this space in nineteen fifty-seven, they turned to the landscape architect Robert Royston to overcome the rigid layout imposed by the structure beneath. He used a clever grid of two-toned concrete and curved, raised planting beds to break up the space, creating the illusion of a natural, sprawling park within the dense urban fabric of Chinatown.
