The building at 1268 Sutter Street began its life in 1911 as a refined hub for the Colin Traver Academy of Dance. In its earliest years, the space hosted peculiar monthly social gatherings like the Serpentine Battle and peanut parties, where attendees were provided with peanuts and favors for the duration of the event. By the 1930s, it had transitioned into a public dance hall, serving as a venue for old-fashioned, organized dances held five times each week.
