San Francisco Opera

The San Francisco Opera stands as a pillar of the city's artistic life, though its origins are tied to a humble game of poker in the North Beach neighborhood. It was there that the Italian conductor Gaetano Merola decided that the city deserved a permanent resident company rather than relying on the revolving door of touring troupes. Merola proved his vision by first staging open-air performances at Stanford Stadium in 1922, where he noticed that the football stadium's acoustics were surprisingly well-suited for grand operatic voices. He successfully raised funds from thousands of local citizens to launch the company the following year. By 1932, the opera secured its permanent home in the War Memorial Opera House, which holds the distinction of being the first municipally owned opera house in the United States.
