140 New Montgomery

The twenty-six story tower at one hundred forty New Montgomery Street was constructed in nineteen twenty-five as the headquarters for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. At the time of its completion, it stood as the tallest building in San Francisco, earning the local nickname of the Telephone Building. Its design was heavily influenced by the work of Eliel Saarinen and was the first significant skyscraper in the city to embrace the Art Deco style. The structure was heralded by the press as a shimmering monument to talk and served as a major technological hub for the region. Winston Churchill notably dialed one of the first transatlantic phone calls from within these very walls.
