Harry Bridges Plaza sits at the foot of Market Street, defined by the tall, bronze-colored clock tower of the Ferry Building looming directly behind it. It commemorates the man who led the nineteen thirty-four West Coast waterfront strike, a massive walkout that shut down the entire Pacific Coast for eighty-three days. Bridges, a dockworker himself, built a powerful labor force here that transformed the city into a stronghold for maritime unions, shaping the way goods and labor moved through the port for decades.
