The Hobart Building rises twenty-one stories above Market Street, topped with a distinctive terra-cotta clock tower that tapers toward the sky. When it opened in nineteen fourteen, the steel-framed structure served as a headquarters for the various mining interests of Walter Hobart. Its architects, Willis Polk and Company, designed the facade with elaborate neoclassical ornamentation that remains etched in the stone today. The building survived the nineteen oh six earthquake because it was built afterward, utilizing the latest seismic steel technology.
