Lotta's Fountain

Lotta's Fountain stands as a tall, ornate cast-iron monument at the intersection of Market, Geary, and Kearny streets. Comedian Lotta Crabtree gifted this drinking fountain to the city in eighteen seventy-five, intending to provide fresh water for people and their horses. During the great earthquake of nineteen oh six, the fountain became the primary meeting point for survivors searching for lost loved ones. Families pinned handwritten notes to its base, transforming the fountain into a makeshift post office for those who lost everything.
