Pioneer Mother (Grafly)

The Pioneer Mother statue standing in Golden Gate Park is the only monument in the entire park dedicated to a woman. Its existence is the result of a long, heated disagreement between its primary sponsor and the artist. San Francisco socialite Ella Sterling Mighels originally envisioned a domestic scene featuring a seated woman holding a Bible and teaching children about morality. Instead, the sculptor Charles Grafly created a standing figure dressed in buckskin with two naked children, a design choice that disappointed his patrons and drew harsh criticism for its departure from their idealized vision.
