Japanese American National Library

The Japanese American National Library exists because of a surge of activism at San Francisco State College in nineteen sixty-nine. During a historic student strike, participants demanded the creation of ethnic studies programs, prompting local community members to gather and compile foundational curriculum materials. This grassroots effort to preserve a culture lacked a permanent home for years, with early collections kept in private garages and basements before finally moving into dedicated spaces within Japantown.
