Sinai Memorial

historic

Sinai Memorial Chapel on Divisadero Street stands as the only Jewish funeral home in all of Northern California. Established in 1901, it began under the name Hebrew Funeral Parlors to provide a dignified final farewell for members of the Jewish community who could not afford the costs of a traditional burial. The institution survives today as a nonprofit organization that carries out the sacred Jewish duty of burying the dead, a volunteer-based practice known as a Chevra Kadisha. By using proceeds from families who can afford services to subsidize the needs of those who cannot, the chapel maintains a longstanding commitment to the principle that everyone deserves a respectful burial regardless of their financial circumstances.
