The asphalt rectangle at one Lombard Street sits on land that once vanished under the high tide of the San Francisco Bay. Before the nineteen fifties, this edge of the North Waterfront belonged to the water, serving as an active pier where ships docked to unload cargo. When the city filled in the shoreline to create more flat ground, the transition left this specific lot as a bare, utilitarian space. Today, it stores cars instead of crates, marked by a faded yellow payment kiosk.
