Koshland House

The Koshland House stands before you as a striking piece of French royal history transported to the sand dunes of San Francisco. Built between 1902 and 1904 for the wealthy wool merchant Marcus Koshland and his wife Corinne, the mansion is an academic replica of the Petit Trianon, the famous garden retreat at the Palace of Versailles. Corinne Koshland commissioned the home after falling in love with the French original during a European tour, and she even utilized the architecture to mirror the eighteenth-century elegance of the French court. The facade is so precise in its proportions and use of Corinthian columns that it remains one of the most recognizable examples of Classical Revival architecture in the city.
