Battery Saffold (1895)

Battery Saffold stands as a formidable relic of the Endicott era, a period when the United States military overhauled coastal defenses to protect harbors from modern warships. Completed in 1898, this site was armed with two twelve-inch guns mounted on barbette carriages, designed to hurl massive projectiles over twelve miles out to sea. While most batteries were restricted to firing toward the open ocean, this installation was unique because it featured specific recesses in its parapet walls that allowed the guns to pivot and fire directly into San Francisco Bay.
