The Diane Disney Miller Exhibition Hall occupies a building with a surprisingly athletic past. Long before it became a venue for high-profile art and animation exhibitions, the structure served as a brick gymnasium for soldiers stationed at the Presidio. Built in nineteen-o-eight, it once echoed with the sounds of soldiers using gymnastic apparatus and bowling lanes. By the mid-twentieth century, the military had transformed this space into a social hub featuring billiard tables, a library, and reading rooms. Today, the high ceilings and open floor plan that once accommodated physical training provide a dedicated space for rotating exhibits that examine the history and artistry behind the Disney legacy.
