The water flowing from El Polin Spring once served as the primary lifeblood for the earliest civilian settlement in San Francisco. In the early nineteenth century, the Spanish soldier Marcelino Briones moved his large family to this specific spot to establish a rancho. They relied entirely on this natural source of fresh water to support their livestock and crops, marking the beginning of private agricultural life in the region.
