Clyfford Still Museum

The Clyfford Still Museum is a stark, poured-in-place concrete box with thin, vertical slats that fracture the Colorado sunlight into sharp patterns inside. It exists because Still, one of the most significant painters of the twentieth century, left his massive estate to any American city that would build a permanent home for his work exclusively. Denver won the contest. Still’s widow, Patricia, spent years vetting curators and architects until this building opened in twenty eleven to house ninety-five percent of his output.
