The Paramount Theatre features a white terra-cotta facade covered in intricate, swirling Art Deco ornaments. Opened in nineteen thirty as a movie palace, it replaced the old Denver Empress Theatre on this site. Architect Temple Buell designed the interior with a rare atmospheric style, meant to evoke an exotic, dreamlike garden under a ceiling painted with shifting clouds. During the nineteen thirties, the Paramount became the primary venue for Denver’s high-society film premieres, drawing crowds who arrived in formal evening wear.
