Caribbean Marketplace

The Caribbean Marketplace in Miami’s Little Haiti features a soaring, brightly painted roof shaped like the sails of a traditional Haitian boat. Architect Charles Pawley designed these structures in the nineteen eighties to provide a centralized hub for local vendors to sell their goods. It was intended to recreate the bustling open-air markets of Port-au-Prince. While the venue faced years of closure and physical decay, its distinctive silhouette remained a defiant marker for the neighborhood’s identity until its recent revitalization.
