A hand-painted sign featuring the flag of Haiti marks the entrance to Libreri Mapou. Inside the narrow storefront, shelves reach the ceiling, packed with books written in Haitian Creole and French. Jan Mapou opened this shop in nineteen eighty-six to preserve Caribbean literature and provide a meeting place for the local Haitian diaspora. He spent decades curating these rare titles, many of which are unavailable elsewhere. Today, it remains a sanctuary for poetry readings and discussions held in the languages of the islands.
